West Dallas

With a Black population of aprox 7,000 West Dallas is mostly working-class and ranges from about 30% to 55% African American in most areas with Hispanics making up the remainder of the population. This is a proud older community with many small pre-WWII wood frame homes. Many have been replaced with new one story brick homes that fit the original lots.

There was a time when West Dallas was home to one of the poorest zip codes in the country because it was home to most of the public housing in the city. After a federal court ruled that it was illegal to concentrate public housing in one neighborhood the project housing was torn down in favor of housing vouchers to be used throughout the city.

Household incomes here average from about $15,000 to $26,000 a year with between 3 to 10% of adults holding a bachelors degree.  Median home values average $40,000 to $75,000 while average rent ranges $450 to $850 a month.
